As you would expect from an Astro game, these take full advantage of the DualSense controller, its haptic feedback and adaptive triggers so you can feel every little step along the journey. We can’t wait for you to get your hands on these and let us know how they feel. These occasionally repetitive enemies are also an important part of Astro Bot’s difficulty. The main levels are never too tough – the real challenge is finding all the bots and collectibles – but there are special secret levels that test your skill. These have no checkpoints, so they’re not for the faint of heart.
How Long Is The Game?
The sheer variation in terms of haptics feeding through the DualSense reminded me that, yes, this controller has some great features – it’s just that nobody is really using it. There is prototyping for games, and there is what Astro does is pull inspiration from the games… Anyway, I bought it, to support the team, and I’m eager to play it.
Sony intentionally disabled CD support on both the PS4 and PS5, so inserting a standard CD into the console simply doesn’t work out of the box. This focus also affected the platformer’s story, as the game has fewer than 13 minutes of cutscenes. Astro Bot’s best moments take inspiration from some of PlayStation’s biggest games while adding a unique twist.
He also offered a nod toward 30 years of PlayStation history, which formed the foundation of Astro Bot’s gameplay. A new batch of five levels were added in July 2025, adding five new cameo bots including a couple of Final Fantasy characters. This is more of a nitpick, mainly because the game is actually catered to everyone.
Once the actual credits finish rolling, a badly beaten Nebulax and his minions are seen floating through space; they threaten the player, but are sent flying by the sudden appearance of the words “THE END”. I went into it with high expectations thanks to Astro Bot Rescue Mission and Astro’s Playroom, and it not only met my expectations, but completely exceeded them. It’s the best 3D platformer since Super Mario Odyssey hit the scene in 2017 and will be remembered as an all-time classic of the genre. Everyone with a PS5 should get their hands on this game ASAP, and hopefully, Team Asobi gets to continue making masterpieces. There are a lot of games nowadays that require you to be frugal with your purchases like Persona 3 Reload and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. This isn’t for any malicious reason, of course, but simply because building a “flat screen” game is very different to building one for virtual reality. I think many would agree that the haptics featured in Astro’s Playroom are still among the best on the system – after all, it was made to show off the controller in the first place.
Astro Bot’s not the largest game in the world — you’ll perhaps see the credits roll in hours or so. Those aiming to rescue every robot, complete every challenge, find every jigsaw piece and unlock every trophy, however, will probably end up playing for around 20 hours or more. It’s the type of game that you’re likely to return to as well, simply because of its feel-good nature. It’s a heartwarming and flawless experience, and a 3D platforming masterpiece. While there’s plenty to like about the hub, which we’ll get into later, the main attraction is the game’s range of levels, which are as varied, playful, and fun as you’d hope.
The game begins with a scene of traveling through space in a huge spaceship that resembles a PS5 console. Suddenly, we are attacked by a green alien, who destroys the spaceship and scatters its parts across various galaxies. Of course, we weren’t traveling alone on the mothership; other bots were with us, and as a result of the wicked attack, they now find themselves in danger.
I even use the microphone to blow into a giant horn, a kind of delightful gameplay interaction that even Nintendo has moved away from in recent years. This is one of the only PS5 games that really feels like it was built around the DualSense, and it shows. That’s why Astro Bot feels as consequential as it does even if it just looks like your average 3D platformer full of collectibles and clever power-ups at a glance. The expertly designed PS5 exclusive plays like an intervention with its own publisher. It brings the PlayStation platform on an intergalactic journey through its history to rediscover its long lost sense of wonder.
Astro Bot’s Journey To Game Of The Year
Graphics aren’t the only presentational element that can elevate a game, and Astro Bot proves that perfectly, but in gameplay terms the most interesting ideas are the many and varied power-ups. https://kuwinapp.net/ are fairly straightforward, like the bulldog rocket that shoots you horizontally forward and can damage objects, while a rooster one can shoot you vertically in the air, which is used to pull objects out of the ground. Once they’re collected, the characters go to hang out on a hub world and you can randomly unlock gatcha toys that provide them with a little diorama or accessory to act out something from their game, like in Astro’s Playroom. There’s still no way to tell who they are though, which seems a bizarre waste after all the legal effort that must’ve gone into licensing them in the first place.
The Playroom was a fun little tech demo meant to show off the unique features of the PlayStation Camera and the DualShock 4, while The Playroom VR filled a similar niche for Sony’s PlayStation VR headset. With Astro Bot Rescue Mission, Team Asobi proved that it was more than capable of creating a remarkable full-length game. Asobi’s winning streak continued with Astro’s Playroom, a pack-in PS5 launch title that did a great job of showing off the DualSense’s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. Simply put, Astro Bot is the studio’s magnum opus and, quite frankly, one of the best 3D platformers ever made.
The machine dispenses new Astro costumes, cosmetic options for the PS5 controller spaceship, and joy for the rescued PS-themed Bots. Each is missing a beloved item that can, once regained, give them a clever new animation to perform in the hub world. However, some long-time players of platformers produced by Sony will be disappointed in Astro Bot’s current endgame offerings. Throughout the hour campaign – around 15 for full completion – Astro encounters power-ups that give them abilities like shrinking, stretchy arms, rocket jump, and more. It’s a highlight of how great Astro Bot’s level design is, which easily ranks high among other action platforming gems with its reasonably hidden secrets and gravity-challenging stages. Still, Astro Bot fails to feel as revolutionary or varied as games that pushed the genre, like Super Mario Odyssey.
There are 91 stages in Astro Bot, making this one of Team Asobi’s biggest and most ambitious games to date. Between them, they boast well over 460 collectibles, including 120 Puzzle Pieces, 10 Lost Galaxy Warps, and 332 stranded Bots that are just waiting to be rescued. I feared it would be a bit of an advert for PlayStation dressed up as a video game – Sony’s own Pepsiman here for the memes and little else.
Team Asobi asserted dominance in this area with Playroom, but the range of effects delivered here through haptic feedback and the adaptive triggers outshines it. These conditions do drain the battery, but the implementation is too good to really worry about that. There are even gameplay mechanics that utilise the haptics in ways we haven’t seen before, like feeling particular walls for a rough texture to reveal a secret. It really shows what the DualSense can do like no other game before it.
