Bluepoint delivers a Demon’s Souls remake that is as much its own as it is From Software’s, and it shows off the power of the PS5 with it. Arguably one of the best entries in the Souls series was the first game, Demon’s Souls. Released back in 2009 it became the dream import game for middlecore hipsters, as the Asian release was fully localized in English and was region free. Now it has been remade for the PlayStation 5 and it’s finally come into its own. If I was at From Software, I would be very worried about now. Simply because churning out the same Souls game every year is no longer an option when other studios can do it so much better. The trophies are also more interesting and less of a slog compared to the original game (shown above), and while I don’t normally bother with trophies, I actually had fun acquiring them all for this remake. There are some other nice tweaks as well, with the target camera being more helpful now, but overall, this feels like a properly streamlined and improved game while still being very faithful to the original. This single change makes the whole game a lot more straightforward and less awkward.

Over-encumbering one’s self is a part of Western role-playing games that seems to be sewn into the very fabric of the genre. Demon’s Souls is no different despite being a Japanese RPG and it was considered quite annoying when the original version was released. Some of it will also come down to how you level up your character, as there are times when enemies might be simple for a melee fighter but difficult for a magic user (and vice-versa).
