It’s best enjoyed as a rare act of reinterpretation, flawed as it is, in a medium that’s so tightly wound about brand guidelines nowadays. In that way, it’s truer to the series’ ’80s roots than any nostalgia-focused Pac-Man game in the past few decades, a gonzo game destined to be remembered as a piece of weird video game trivia. There’s no shame in that if it winds up being its ultimate legacy.

They explore the games’ creative and technical sides, offering fresh views. Like in all the best RPGs, it’s not the world you hope to save that matters, but the frivolous jobs you do along the way. I remember a dubious situation between a Paradis woman and her weirdly adoring Xaurip admirers more vividly than any of the major plot beats. Likewise, visiting my companion Marius’s vanquished home village, crouched in the shadow of a giant volcano, was more impactful than finally confronting the fascistic antagonist for the first time. I was more proud of saving a brothel in Paradis than I was of deciding to have mercy on a villain who I really ought to have, in retrospect, killed.

Blades of Fire stands out with its engaging combat system and weapon customization. Unfortunately, the game can be irritating and even boring at times, which makes it just average. You may not have expected to see a turn-based tactics TMNT game, and especially not from one of the most prolific indie teams of the last few years. Mario Kart World strengthens the series with an interconnected open-world twist that brings fresh energy to its beloved formula. Packed with new tracks and modes, it’s another Mario Kart you’ll want to own.

It all flows into the pageantry and presentation, but the impact on gameplay is a nice addition. I applaud EA’s approach to gamify the high school portion without having users play through full prep games. It’s more mission-based, and the quick feedback you get from schools makes it move at a solid pace. To put it plain, Dynasty Mode is mostly fantastic as EA even expanded the already strong Team Builder feature to improve team creation. That said, you still can’t create or edit players on existing schools.

The catch is that you need the new Nintendo Switch 2 console to play it. Donkey Kong Bananza won’t work on the original Switch — or on any other gaming device. We know the struggles of putting together a quality gaming setup. Monster Train 2 doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but as far as roguelike deckbuilders go it’s one of the best available. Easy to pick up but hard to master, Victory Heat Rally is one of the better arcade racing games available on Switch. Ready or Not is a tense tactical shooter that’s enjoyable whether you play it alone or with others.
